Complete the Verse hides one significant word in a passage and asks you to put it back. It is the closest thing here to classic Scripture memory work, and it is unforgiving in a useful way: the missing word is never a filler word like "that" or "unto", it is always a word that carries the meaning.

How to play Complete the Verse

  1. A King James Version verse appears with one word replaced by a blank, and its reference is shown above it as a hint.
  2. The blanked word is always longer than four letters and never a common connecting word, so the answer is one that actually changes what the verse says.
  3. Four options are offered. The three wrong ones are real words lifted from other verses in the collection, so they read as plausible Scripture rather than as obvious filler.
  4. Ten verses make a round.

What this game teaches

Word-level accuracy. Reading a familiar verse and recalling its gist is easy; recalling which word Scripture actually uses is not. Working through a round tends to expose the verses you thought you knew word for word and do not.

Complete the Verse — frequently asked questions

Which word gets removed from the verse?
Always a meaningful one. The game only blanks words longer than four letters that are not on its list of common connecting words, so you are never asked to supply a "which" or a "there" — you are asked for the word the verse turns on.
Do I get a hint?
Yes. The verse's reference is shown above the blanked text, so if you know the passage you can work back to the missing word. The four answer options are the other hint.
Is Complete the Verse good for memorising Scripture?
It is built for exactly that. Recognising a verse is a much weaker form of memory than being able to reproduce it, and filling in a removed word tests the stronger one. Pair it with Guess the Verse, which drills the reference rather than the wording.
