How the Verse of the Day Is Chosen
The verse of the day is decided by the date, not by chance. A fixed shuffle of the devotional collection is walked one verse per day, so everyone who opens this page today reads the same verse.
Every day the site publishes is then written down, and the archive above reads from that record rather than recalculating it. That distinction is the whole reason this page can be trusted: the verse for a date used to be derived from the shuffle alone, which meant that editing the collection by a single verse quietly reassigned almost every date in the past. An archive is a claim about what was actually shown, so it is kept as a record.
The cycle is 404 of the collection’s 439 verses. It is a curated subset rather than the whole: the random button on the homepage draws from all 439, but the verse this site puts in front of a reader unasked, without any surrounding chapter, is an editorial choice, and this site is used by children as well as adults.
Where a verse is quoted above it is printed in full from the King James Version with its book, chapter and verse, so you can find it in your own Bible and read what surrounds it. That reference is there on purpose: a verse read in its chapter says far more than a verse read alone, and the dated verse is meant to be a way in rather than the whole of it.
